A Beginner's Guide to CNC Woodworking

February 12, 2023

CNC, or Computer Numerical Control, is technology that uses computer software to automate the production of parts and components. Here’s a beginner’s guide to understanding it.

What Is CNC?

CNC lets you use computer software to control machine tools and automate production — this covers mills, lathes, and routers alike.

Types of CNC Machines

There are many types, including mills, lathes, routers, plasma cutters, and laser cutters. Each is built for specific kinds of cuts or operations.

Software

CNC machines run on computer software that lets you create and edit programs, set toolpaths, and control the machine’s movement — everything from free, open-source tools to commercial packages.

Creating Programs

You start with CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software to model the part you want, then use CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software to generate toolpaths and G-code — the instructions the machine actually follows.

Running Programs

Once the program is set, the machine follows the toolpaths automatically to produce the part.

Safety

Proper safety procedure matters as much with CNC as with any other shop tool — protective equipment, securing loose clothing, and keeping clear of the cutting area while the machine runs.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance — cleaning, lubricating, checking and tightening hardware, replacing worn parts — keeps a CNC machine running accurately for years.

Understanding these basics is the starting point for using CNC technology to automate and refine your own builds.
