Designing a Coffee Table
February 12, 2023
Designing a coffee table is a fun and creative project that anyone with a basic understanding of woodworking can take on. Here’s how to approach it.
1. Determine the Size
Measure the space where the table will live and consider the surrounding furniture and seating height — a table that’s the wrong size will bother you every day.
2. Choose the Style
Traditional, modern, or somewhere in between — pick a style that complements the room rather than fighting it.
3. Select the Materials
Solid wood, plywood, MDF, or engineered wood all behave differently. Weigh durability, ease of use, and budget before committing.
4. Make a Sketch
A rough sketch with dimensions and design elements helps you catch problems before they’re cut into the wood.
5. Cut and Assemble the Pieces
Cut to your design, then assemble with wood glue and screws.
6. Sand and Finish
Sand smooth, then apply paint, stain, or varnish.
7. Add Hardware
Drawer handles, legs, or a bottom shelf can finish the piece off, if your design calls for them.
A coffee table is a forgiving first furniture project — small enough to finish in a weekend, substantial enough to actually live with afterward.
